Upcycling hits the home show

You know upcycling has entered the mainstream when it hits the big show — namely, the Vancouver Home + Design Show, now on at BC Place Stadium. It’s hosting the Ultimate Upcycle Challenge, featuring some of B.C.’s most talented DIY decor-design bloggers.

The challenge? Five bloggers are asked to select a piece of second-hand furniture or an accessory from Habitat for Humanity’s Restore and rework it to a higher standard of decor. Each item will be on display at the show and visitors asked to vote on their favourite. And all items are available for purchase via silent auction, with proceeds donated to Habitat for Humanity.

Show manager Jill Kivett contends that upcycling is becoming popularized via contemporary design and decor trends. Finding a castoff and not just reusing it, but turning it into something better, takes recycling to the next level, she says.
